Passport Initiative

Applications received by the Friday, November 22nd deadline will be reviewed and have a decision by Wednesday, November 27th. All other applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

The Global Learning Office will be awarding 30 undergraduate students passports! Award recipients will be walked through the application process. GLO staff will take and pay for award recipients’ passport pictures, assist in completing the passport application, and walk recipients to the Evanston post office to submit their passport application. While this is primarily a need-based scholarship, the quality of the application and responses will factor into the selection of award recipients. Students do not have to have applied or be in the process of applying for a study abroad program in order to be considered for this award. There will be NO reimbursement option for students who purchase a passport on their own.

While this is primarily a need-based scholarship, the quality of the application and responses will factor into the selection of award recipients Please note that receiving this award is NOT contingent on participating in a study abroad program. If you are applying for this passport initiative in hopes of participating in GLO study abroad programs in 2025, please pay close attention to passport processing times and how they coincide with your program start dates and/or visa application timelines. GLO will not pay for expedited passport processing.

  2. Have you ever traveled internationally? If so, please tell us where?
  3. If awarded this scholarship, are you able to provide evidence of United States citizenship through original documents (not a photocopy) of the following documents: birth certificate, old passport, state issued ID, Wildcard student ID and/or a social security card? Please note that award recipients will have approximately 2-3 weeks to gather these documents after being notified.
  4. What is the value of having a passport in relation to diversity, equity, and inclusion?
  5. If awarded this scholarship, how would having a passport help you achieve your personal, academic, and professional goals?
  6. I acknowledge and understand the following: This award only covers the cost of one standard priced US passport book and fees for undergraduate NU students. This award does not cover the cost of expedited services or additional passport cards. Award recipients will be taken by Northwestern staff to submit their application at the Evanston post office. Staff will take care of passport photos and passport payments. Students will not directly receive money for the passport and fees. This award is valued at approximately $185. Should a recipients award cost less than this amount, there should be no expectation of receiving “leftover funds”. Decisions will be announced on November 27 via northwestern university email. There will be NO reimbursements awarded for recently purchased passports. Please feel free to contact Ryan Rounds with any questions.
